It originated in 2019.

Voor ons begon het aan twee bureaus. We werkten samen als foto-editors en raakten aan de praat over fotografie, uitrusting en alles wat daarbij komt kijken. Tijdens dat gesprek vertelde Lotte dat ze graag een leren camera harnas wilde, maar het zonde vond om er één uit Amerika te laten overkomen. Het voelde omslachtig en bovendien miste ze een product dat écht aansloot bij de wensen van fotografen.

Birgit keek op na het zien van een foto en zei bijna vanzelfsprekend: "Die kunnen we zelf maken?"

Die ene zin halverwege 2019 bleek het begin van The Hantler.

An idyllic studio

Our first prototypes were created in a small studio at the back of Birgit's garden. A cozy workspace, hidden among the greenery and surrounded by wisteria that crept over the roof. There, the first patterns were drawn, the first pieces of leather were cut, and the first camera harnesses were assembled by hand.
The craft is growing

Nog altijd denken we met veel plezier terug aan die plek. Niet omdat alles daar zo instagrammably perfect was, maar omdat daar de basis werd gelegd voor alles waar The Hantler vandaag voor staat.

We groeiden echter uit onze jas en zijn inmiddels verhuisd naar een ruim atelier in Kaatsheuvel, waar we iedere dag met dezelfde aandacht en zorg onze producten maken. Nog steeds met de hand. Nog steeds in Nederland, nog steeds in een pand wat ambacht uitstraalt.

Waalwijk staat al generaties lang bekend als dé leerstad van Nederland. Dankzij Birgits achtergrond in de leerindustrie konden we vanaf het begin samenwerken met vakmensen en leveranciers die dezelfde liefde voor kwaliteit delen als wij.

Daarom kiezen we bewust voor hoogwaardige materialen van voornamelijk Europese oorsprong en werken we zoveel mogelijk samen met lokale partners. Zo beperken we onnodig transport, behouden we controle over de kwaliteit en weten we precies waar onze materialen vandaan komen.

Meet the makers

In 2017 kruisten onze paden elkaar. Lotte bracht haar ervaring als professioneel fotograaf mee, Birgit haar kennis van leer, productontwikkeling en ambacht. Wat begon als een eenvoudig gesprek groeide uit tot een gedeelde droom.

Birgit Holman

Birgit is a true creator. With her background in product development and love for the leather craft, she knows how to turn ideas into sustainable products that are meticulously designed. Besides The Hantler, she runs her own webshop, where her creativity comes to life again. In her free time, she likes to go with her Labradoodle Harvey to the Belgian Ardennes, where she seeks nature and finds her inspiration in painting flowers and landscapes.

Lotte van Alderen

Lotte has been a professional dog photographer for over fifteen years and feels happiest with a camera in her hand and her dogs Puck and Soda by her side. She enjoys long walks in nature, the warm light during sunset, and the peace that comes with it. Her daily experience as a photographer and her extensive network within photography form the basis for many ideas and developments within The Hantler.
